The Invisible Heart Characters

The Invisible Heart Character List

Nancy Folbre

Folbre is the narrator of the book, and she focuses on altruism, feminism, and self-interest. According to Folbre, society has disadvantaged women and put them on the lowest ladder despite their immense contribution to the world's economic growth. Most societies have restricted women to childbearing and taking care of homesteads. However, women have proved that, given equal opportunities, they can exploit their potential and achieve great things in life.

Folbre does not dispute the significance of care in society, and she uses the Invisible Heart as a platform to stress the significance of balancing altruism and self-interest. The people who need care, including children, should be considered; at the same time, women should have an opportunity to be productive and thrive in life.

According to Folbre, several rules govern society regardless of gender and social and economic status. Therefore, women are among the people who should be given the freedom to define their destinies. Folbre observes that societies that have given women freedom have flourished and will continue to be world leaders.

Liberal feminists

Liberal feminists are a group of women who have come out boldly to demand women's rights. Liberal women demand greater social obligations not limited to giving birth and caring for homes. For instance, liberal feminists argue that girls should be given access to education and economic opportunities to exploit their potential.

Margaret Thatcher

Margaret Thatcher was a politician and economist who taught the world the significance of empowering citizens, regardless of gender, to depend on themselves. According to Thatcher, a government that does not empower its citizens is like a cow, and all citizens will depend on milk from it, which is unsustainable.
