Hugo Cabret
An orphan who lives at the train station, constantly avoiding the authorities who will try to return him to the custody of his abusive, drunk uncle. He has a mysterious toy that lands him a job at a mysterious toy kiosk in the station where he meets an unlikely character—a missing filmmaker thought to be dead.
Georges Méliès
This toy shop owner works at the train station where he is constantly plagued by Hugo. His goddaughter Isabelle ends up befriending Hugo, to make things worse. Secretly, Georges is also a famous filmmaker, thought to be dead, living as a toy maker. He made the little automaton Hugo likes.
Isabelle
Georges Méliès has a young goddaughter close to Hugo's age, and since she hangs out at the toy shop a lot, she ends up being friends with him. Isabelle is a bridge between Hugo and the annoyed toy shop owner, helping her uncle to see that Hugo is a person in serious need.
Etienne
This clever friend of Isabelle's ends up being friends with Hugo too, which brings the plot together because Etienne brings an audience to meet Méliès. She is like Hugo in that they are very spontaneous and sometimes frantic.
Station Inspector
This man is a grumpy man whose job it is to rid the station of Hugo's menacing. But he often treats the boy very cruelly, forgetting the age and circumstances of the boy. They play a game of cat and mouse throughout the book.
