The Hunger Games is a dystopian action film directed by Gary Ross and based on the 2008 novel The Hunger Games by Suzanne Collins.

The film stars Jennifer Lawrence, Josh Hutcherson, Liam Hemsworth and Woody Harrelson and its development began in March 2009.

The films is set in the nation of Panem in a post-apocalyptic future. The Hunger Games were a televised competition between 24 teenagers who had to fight and kill until there was a sole survior and therefore, winner. The Games were held by The Capitol and said to be punishment for past generation´s rebellion. The films follows Katniss Everdeen and Peeta Mellark as they are forced to fight for their lives in this competition.

The film premiered on March 12th 2012 in Los Angeles and received many positive reviews from critics. They praised it for being faithful to the book, Lawrence´s performance and the messages in the film.

The film grossed 695.2 million dollars, setting records for a non-sequel and becoming the ninth highest-grossing film of the year.
