Time
Time is the biggest theme underlying the motives of each character. The eruption of the war meant that there were disturbances to everyone’s lives, and every moment counted for it could be their last. Time is often compared to what life was like before and after the war: "vacuum as to future was offset by vacuum as to past." Some long to return to the past, such as Louie with her estranged husband, whereas others look towards a better future, like Rodney does when he inherits the estate.
Patriotism
This is a strong theme surrounding both Robert and Harrison’s interactions throughout the novel. Whilst Robert denies being a spy for the German government, he eventually admits to the truth and instead of giving himself up, commits suicide. Indeed, Harrison is conflicted because he loves Stella, but he also loves his country and feels it his duty to give up his information on Robert.
Love
Love is prominently displayed through the love triangle between Stella, Robert and Harrison. Harrison believes himself to be, and in some ways is, the better man for Stella. However, she loves Robert, despite all his flaws and burdens. The unrequited love causes Harrison to behave in perverse ways, and he tries to blackmail Stella into being with him.
