Chapter 1

Set in the northeastern part of the Great Lakes/Rust Belt region of the US, an unnamed limited-omniscient third-person narrator describes a married couple sleeping in their small Honda. They are forced to keep the windows closed as they sleep to prevent being attacked by violent gangs and vandals. Both Charmaine and Stan stink because they don't often find places to bathe or wash their clothes. Their living conditions make Stan irritable, but Charmaine tries to keep a positive attitude.
