The Corpse
In the story, we are given great detail into how the Baron and Countess managed to get rid of the body. The Baron, being a sort of chemist, manages to decompose the body with acid. This gruesome image of a torturous and cruel death makes the reader squeamish and even nauseous.
The Gold Teeth
The gold teeth were a set of false teeth worn by Lord Montbarry when he was alive. His brother, Henry, finds them in his house and becomes suspicious of why it was there in the first place. This imagery of the gold teeth peaks the reader’s curiosity about the link to a possible murder. Indeed, soon after finding the teeth, Henry realizes that the teeth lead on to the head, which is hidden away in the house.
Room 13a
This is the room that Lord Montbarry perished in, unknown to anyone except the Countess and Baron. When Agnes comes to stay over, she finds herself unable to sleep and feels nauseous. She also dreams of a head rolling about in the ceiling. Of course, this morbid imagery is not just her imagination but an actual reality. The ceiling hides the head of the Count and seems to make itself obvious through its decaying stench.
