Theme of inhumane treatment of low-class workers
The migrant workers are treated like animals that are only there to be used but not taken care of. When their work is finished and they are not needed anymore ways are looked to dispose of them. This means that migrant workers have to survive on very small wages with miserable living conditions. Foreign workers who come for work alone without their families are able to manage but it is a different story when it comes to those whose families are with them and depend on this work. Large farm associations don't see these workers as people that should be given some decent human treatment but only as tools for their work. Force is used when necessary and when it is not and any type of organizing of workers for their own protection is quickly diminished.
Theme of treatment of foreign labour vs. home labour
Surprisingly, American migrant laborers aren't treated much differently from foreign migrant laborers. They face the same type of alienation and indecent treatment as them. The difference is that foreign laborers come to California purposefully searching for the work while American migrant laborers are forced to leave their home in search for work to survive. Just like foreign laborers these are not given any type of proper information about their work or any proper human decency. The difference is that these American laborers, unlike foreign laborers, have nowhere else to go so to treat them the same as foreign migrant laborers won't function for very long.
