The Hand the Feeds You Imagery

The apartment

The apartment is a place of order and repose, but she does have several large dogs. When she invites her fiancé to live with her after having dated long-distance, online, the dynamic changes. Home starts to be somewhat difficult and depressing, although she struggles to find the honesty to admit this to herself. One day, she arrives to find that the natural powers in her home, the dogs, have executed a judgment on her behalf that is quite horrifying to her. They have killed the fiancé and ripped his corpse to shreds.

University imagery

Morgan is a student at John Jay College of Criminal Justice, and the imagery of her school time, her classes, her campus, and her research all help to paint the portrait of her life. She is writing a thesis so much of her time involves reading and writing, and when she realizes that her thesis material failed to help her in her personal life, the university imagery leads her into a journey through which she must reconcile her knowledge with her beliefs.

Therapy and self-care

Morgan goes to therapy and discovers that the whole process of therapy is healing. There is a unique abstract quality of introspection and reflection that happens going to and from therapy. There is the actual care itself and the conversations that she enjoys which sometimes lead her to epiphanies. But mostly, the imagery speaks of her willingness to work for her own health and wellness. Her perspective is improved by her attention to self-care.

Justice and injustice

For Morgan, life is colored in the shades of justice and injustice. She studies criminal justice, and in her life, she is on a journey toward enforcing justice in her private life on her own behalf. She learns that there is injustice in the way she does relationships, because she lets people use and abuse her. She isn't standing up for the victim in those situations, and this juxtaposition of public justice and private justice is also the subject of her thesis.
