It is clear, by reading the cast list, that The Great Escape wasn’t only an important movie to be told, but to be made as well. As the characters in the movie were mostly based on real people that has served in different military facilities in the west, the actors to play these characters had to have the same background. Actors like Steve McQueen, who had formerly served in the United States Marine Corps, were represented in the movie. This is also one of the reasons why the movie had such a great reception, as it showed the heroic acts of the people that fought during the second world war.
At the same time, the history of the soldiers that died during the Second World War, particularly those that participated in The Great Escape, were honored. Including some political statements, the history is made eternal through the movie. John Sturges knew how important history is, not only to remember by, but to honor those that have helped the world to become what it is today, as well as making sure disasters like a world war never happens again.
Hilts, one of the definite main characters in the hurdle of important characters, is often highlighted. This is because he is strong, not only physically, but mentally as well. This is the reason he manages to stay strong willed and continue trying to escape and help the people in war. He understands that is bigger than himself, which is why he even gets caught on purpose, only to escape once again.The movie is thus telling us that, even though there were many different people and stories that were obtained from the war, the whole community is still more important.
Lastly, it is very clear how important camaraderie is in this movie. Most of the characters died, yet they died happy. This is highlighted towards the end of the book. They worked together for a greater good, giving them not only a sense of belonging but a feeling of reason and hope for the future. They learned to love each other and enjoy each moment they had together, even though their circumstances were horrible.
