Relationship to Other Books

The Good Earth is part of the House of Earth trilogy, which also includes the novels Sons (1932) and A House Divided (1935). Some of Buck's other novels include East Wind: West Wind (1930), China Sky (1941), and Imperial Woman (1956). Some of Buck's nonfiction works on China include The Man Who Changed China: The Story of Sun Yat-sen (1953) and China as I See It (1970).

Students may benefit from reading translations of the "Four Classic Novels" of China: Romance of the Three Kingdoms, Journey to the West, Water Margin, and Dream of the Red Chamber (14th-18th centuries).
