The Giver Lesson Plan

Relationship to Other Books

Lois Lowry's subsequent works in The Giver Quartet, Messenger, Son, and Gathering Blue probably have the closest connection to The Giver. Some of Lowry's other books, such as Number the Stars, also depict children surviving in oppressive conditions.

Teachers might assign other classic dystopian books, such as 1984, Animal Farm, or The Hunger Games. Teachers might also consider assigning modern young adult books that focus on the importance of choice, such as Allie Condie's Matched, which depicts a world in which Society makes peoples' choices for them.

The story Harrison Bergeron considers many of the same themes of mandated "equality."
