Hannah Rosenthal
Hannah is the titular protagonist of The German Girl. Before the war, she lived in Berlin as a wealthy, pampered heiress, favorite pastimes being having tea with her mother in a luxurious hotel and spending afternoons with her best friend Leo. However, once the Nazis invade Germany, her charmed life falls apart. With her family and Leo, whom she has made a pact with, she must escape Berlin by ship. But their plans are foiled.
Leo Martin
Leo is Hannah's childhood best friend. He and his family also must escape Berlin with Hannah. On the ship, he and Hannah develop a close romantic relationship. However, they are forced to part from each other when they discover the ship's passengers are no longer allowed to disembark in many countries due to them having banned them entrance.
Anna Rosen
Anna Rosen is Hannah's great-grandniece. When she receives a mysterious letter from the estranged Hannah, she travels to Havana to meet her and there, listens to Hannah's tale.
