The Four Loves Background

The Four Loves Background

Love is a strong feeling of intense affection whose cause of sensation remains a mystery to humans. However, in The Four Loves, C.S. Lewis explores four types of love, namely, Storge-affection love, Phileo-friendship love, Eros-romantic love, and Agape-divine love. Lewis narrates his ideas about love and tries to convince people to disregard some love misconceptions so as to love in a God-honoring manner. According to Lewis, people can only draw their love from human nature and divine nature. Human-based love entails loving and being loved. Divine-based love is honest.

Lewis describes Storge love as a bond between relatives or people who are related in a particular manner. Storge love is an innate instinct that exists between a parent and a child. This love exists naturally due to familiarity. The next type of love is Phileo love. Lewis describes this kind of love as a situation where people meet and have companionship. Such kind of people tends to have similar interests. Lewis claims that Phileo love is the least required type of love. Eros is a romantic love that involves a feeling of being in love.

Agape love is the noblest among the loves. Lewis describes it as a divine-based natural love that entails loving everything, including foes. Indeed, the author explains the pitfalls of each type of love. However, he notes that this kind of love can lead one to sin when besmirched. The book makes readers think about the significance of each type of love. The love between people is essential as the love between people and the divine.
