Shipwrecked irony
The protagonist is initially shipwrecked on an island and believes that she will not find comfort in her new location. However, later in the text she discovers that the island is better than her native country.
Colonial irony
Unca is an interesting character in this text, as she is half-Native American and Half-English. When she finds herself shipwrecked she begins to teach the native people about Christianity. When speaking about colonialism, Unca is an interesting and ironic figure, as although she is half Native American, she is also perpetuating the issue of colonialism.
Irony of feminism
This text is celebrated as an early feminist text, exploring the strength and power of women. At the time it was published, the text was criticized as it was thought to give women tempting ideas about being more adventurous. As such, the author's feminist message was ironically misunderstood.
