Quotes

"The law is simple. Every experience is repeated or suffered till you experience it properly and fully the first time."

Okri

Azaro observes the reinforcement of a natural law through the governing laws of his society. In this quotation he describes the process of making peace. He chooses to engage boldly with his life experiences, not denying the effects of any particular experience. He's interested in making peace with life and the forces which govern it, so that he may progress to higher levels of understanding.

"One human life is deeper than the ocean. Strange fishes and sea-monsters and mighty plants live in the rock-bed of our spirits. The whole of human history is an undiscovered continent deep in our souls. There are dolphins, plants that dream, magic birds inside us. The sky is inside us. The earth is in us."

Okri

Because of his unusual experience of the spiritual world, Azaro brings his community an interesting perspective on the nature of the human soul. He believes that every person contains unreachable depths and connections with all other facets of the natural world. Thus the individual may tap into the entire collective human existence by merely participating in understanding their own mind.

"A dream can be the highest point of a life."

Okri

This maxim takes on significance in light of Azaro's father's dreams. Nightly the older man wrestles with dark spiritual forces, fighting his way through illnesses, injuries, and inexplicable depressions. He's a spiritual warrior who has learned the rational value of the dream by allowing his sleeping to bear consequence upon his waking.

"A man must be able to hold his drink because drunkenness is sometimes necessary in this difficult life."

Okri

This pronouncement of Azaro's father reveals insight into the trouble of daily life in their village. The people really are oppressed. They fight for survival for themselves and their families on a daily basis. Unfortunately this means that they may not always have time or energy to tend to their internal lives, making alcohol a seemingly necessary supplement. Rather then dealing with mental and emotional strain, people like Azaro's father prefer sometimes to burn those feelings and ideas away with alcohol.
