The Family Under the Bridge Irony

The Family Under the Bridge Irony

Armand's Lunch

Armand is hungry, so he sits down to enjoy a lunch of broiled steak and over cooked potatoes, proclaiming himself "stuffed" afterwards. His declaration is both ironic and sad, as the meal he enjoyed is not his own, but the smell of someone else's lunch cooking in the restaurant that he is sitting outside.

Armand's Lunch Break

Armand gives himself two hours for lunch because that is the amount of time that a Frenchman gives himself for lunch. This is ironic because Armand is not actually eating the lunch. It is merely enjoying the smell of it cooking, but is claiming his traditional two hour lunch break nonetheless.

Father Christmas

The cheeky young boy tells Armand that he is right about Father Christmas really existing because he has seen him at the department store. This situation is ironic because although both Armand and the boy are in agreement about seeing him, the boy knows it is the real Father Christmas and Armand knows it is really his friend Camille dressed up. Both are seeing the same person but both are interpreting the person they have seen differently.

Madame Calcet's Attitude Towards Armand

When Madame Calcet first meets Armand, she is very disapproving of him and thinks of him as an old tramp, a view which is ironic because she is in the same situation as he is; he is dirty because he has been living on the streets for longer. She is also angry that he has encouraged the children to sing for money and believes he is leading them astray but this too is ironic because they have brightened the day of so many people in the square who listened to them, and they have earned enough money for food and a little extra, which they had not done till Armand took them under his wing.

Armand's Opinion of Children

Armand claims not to like children but Morelia points out the irony of this belief, which is that he doesn't like to be around them because they will win him over and find their way into his heart.
