The Eumenides is the third play in the Oresteia, a trilogy by the Greek tragedian Aeschylus. The Eumenides is preceded by Agamemnon and The Libation Bearers. The only other Greek tragedians whose work has survived are Sophocles (Ajax, Antigone, Women of Trachis, Oedipus Rex, Electra, Philoctetes, and Oedipus at Colonus) and Euripides (Alcestis, Medea, and Hippolytus).

Aeshylus's work has influenced countless other dramatists, Shakespeare being one of the most notable. Major tragedies by Shakespeare include Romeo and Juliet, Hamlet, Othello, King Lear, and Macbeth.
