The End of Utopia is a hypothetical novel that explores the idea of what will happen when political rivalry has run out. Jacoby unleashes his controversial ideas about the fact that there will one day be no political parties because no one will have that much of a difference of opinion. The book particularly takes time to frown upon the current ideas and actions of liberals, or, Democrats.
Jacoby claims that liberal officials no longer imagine a society that is completely different from the one we live in today, in America and other Western countries. Rather, they simply want to slightly modify it to better suit each timeline.
Jacoby describes the hypocritical aspects of liberals, such as when they used to deem the market as destructive, and now cherish it. He also claims that liberals used to frown upon mass media, but now worship it as a primary freedom device.
The novel traces the path of modern events in world history, like the Cold War and the rise of multiculturalism. In societies where there are many ideas, there is usually bound to be disagreement. However, the lack of political ideas has led people to a standstill, and no one is still looking for the once stereotypical dream of a political utopia.
