The Doctor and the Devils (Play) Background

The Doctor and the Devils (Play) Background

Although best-known for his poems (including classics like "Do not go gentle into that good night"), Welshman Dylan Thomas wrote a number of unproduced screenplays and plays during his long and illustrious career. Among those plays is The Doctor and the Devils, which is based on the infamous Scottish body-snatchers Burke and Hare and tells a similar story of psychopaths, violence, homicide, mystery, and the macabre.

The Doctors and the Devils was never widely read or reviewed. Despite that, those who have read the play generally like it. One reviewer said the play was "wonderfully-written, fast-paced, thoughtful, and cripplingly well-observed." Another called it "very good" and" A surprisingly wonderful and impressive [play]."
