Jabez Stone
Extremely unlucky farmer in New Hampshire who gets so fed up with his lack of a blessing or windfall that he becomes desperate. So desperate is Jabez Stone that he sells his soul to one Mr. Scratch and finally the windfall comes. Seven years of prosperity such as he’s never experienced. But then the devil comes calling for his due. Jabez hires Daniel Webster to defend his case and save his soul.
Mr. Scratch
Mr. Scratch, of course, is nothing less than the Devil himself. Appearing in human form, he convinces Jabez to make the transaction that will gain him the man’s soul in exchange for a serious turn of fortune. Scratch agrees to trial so that Webster can defend Jabez, but on condition that he pick the jury. That jury turns out to be a hive of scum and villainy from America’s past.
Daniel Webster
Daniel Webster is the real life politician, attorney and widely considered to be one of America’s greatest orators. Though facing a jury of the damned, Webster’s noted eloquence manages to convince the jury to vote in favor of his client, Jabez Stone.
