The Complicities Background

The Complicities Background

Stacey D'Erasmo's The Complicities was first published in September 2022 by Algonquin Books. Although it is a short novel, its story packs a massive punch. Fundamentally, The Complicities tells the story an older woman who deals with the fallout of her husband's financial fraud.

After she discovers her husband's financial fraud, the woman (named Suzanne) is repulsed by him and attempts to escape her current life and create a new one. But she isn't able to escape her old life like she thought she would be able to. Life, as it often does, gets in her way of her new life and her healing.

Though The Complicities sold quite a few copies, it received very mixed reviews. Some loved D'Erasmo's novel; others, particularly members of the general public and not the reviewing community, thought the book was disappointing largely because of the way that D'Ersamo writes. Kirkus Reviews, however, loved the book. In their glowing review of the novel, they wrote that The Complicities is "Slow burning but thoughtful and deftly structured." The Washington Post felt similarly. In their review of the novel, they called it "forceful." The New York Times said it was a "tricky and absorbing tale."
