Bose also tells us about his brother, who is five years older. He followed in his father's footsteps and studied medicine in England. He began work in London soon after and had no plans to return to India.

Bose explains that after the death of his father, he moved with his mother to Calcutta, to stay with her brother.
Promode, from "Indigo"
Promode was Bose's classmate while he lived in Monghyr. Bose is delighted to receive a letter from him after he moved to Calcutta, and the events of the story take place when he is on the journey to visit him.
Ashamanja Babu
Ashamanja Babu is the eponymous protagonist of "Ashamanja Babu's Dog." Like many of Ray's protagonists, Ashamanja is from Calcutta. At the beginning of the story, we are told that he is a rather content person, and only wishes for some companionship.
Biren Babu
Biren Babu is Ashamanja's friend in "Ashamanja Babu's Dog." He is surprised when he sees that his friend has bought a dog, and gives him some advice.
