“The Collar” is a lyric poem in which a single speaker recounts a rant he let out in a moment of internal turmoil. In his raving, the speaker reveals two sides of himself. First, he states his intention to rebel against God to seek his freedom and pleasure. Then, a second internal voice suggests that his feelings of displeasure are actually a case of his own making. While the rant concludes with the speaker’s first voice rejecting this argument, at the end of the quote, he reveals that he soon heard God’s voice calling to him, and replied back.
