Racism

Grace Enright is a racist woman who despises the black people of Curaçao. She is intolerant to them and wishes to go back home, where Caucasian people are a majority. Grace goes as far as to instill racist sentiment in her son. Phillip picks up on his mother's racial prejudice and uses it against Timothy.

Survival

Stranded at sea, Phillip and Timothy must be steadfast in ensuring they survive this tragic ordeal. They manage to arrive at a small island. Once there, Timothy takes it upon himself to teach Phillip how to survive. Together, they build a shelter and find sustenance in hopes of one day being rescued.

War

Germany invading Poland disrupts peace all around the world, sparking the second world war. German submarines arrive in Curaçao. Fearing an all out war in the area, civilians begin to flee. Grace and Phillip board a vessel setting sail for Virginia. Unfortunately, German submarines mistake the civilian vessel for a military vessel and torpedo it. Many lives are lost, and many others are unaccounted for.
