The Canterbury Tales Lesson Plan

Study Objectives

If all of the elements of this lesson plan are employed, students will develop the following powers, skills, and understanding:

    Students will be aware of the historical context of the Canterbury Tales, including social structure in the Middle Ages and Geoffrey Chaucer's life and poetic concerns, and how that influences the text and informs our interpretation.

    Students will understand the genre(s) of the individual tales and the Canterbury Tales as a whole, supported by specific textual evidence and analysis related to genre conventions and how Chaucer conforms to or breaks them.
