Daniel
Daniel is the main protagonist of the novel. He was sold as a slave and then joined a group of outcasts in the mountain, Zealots, Jews under the command of a person called Rosh, assembling for a cause to fight the oppression of Romans.
Joel
Joel comes from a well-off Jewish family, but decides to join the Zealots and follow Rosh's commands. The novel begins with Daniel, Joel, and Thacia meeting on the mountain.
Thacia
Thacia is Joel's twin sister, and she decides to join Daniel and the Zealots as well. They make a vow to fight for God's justice. Thacia is also Daniel's love interest.
Leah
Leah is Daniel's sister, who suffers psychological problems prompted by trauma and isolation from the outside world, but the society believes her to be plagued by demons. She seemingly overcomes this slowly when she and Daniel move into Simon's house, but her trauma gets triggered at the end when Daniel scolds her for talking to the Roman soldier.
Jesus
Jesus is a character in the novel as well, and the novel shows his slow rise among the people as a healer and a messenger of God. The novel portrays him as a selfless helper of the ill and poor, even at the cost of his strength and health.
