The Bridge at Andau is a nonfiction account of the Hungarian revolutions. The Bridge at Andau itself was a small bridge on the Austrian border that represented escape for many refugees. This book was written by James A. Michener, who interviewed many of these refugees as they were leaving Austria. With the stories they told, he wrote of the evils that a Communist system created.
Through each of the characters, Michener systematically shows how Communism does not work, and how they contributed to the revolution. James A. Michener implores his readers to understand that what happened in Hungarian with the AVO men will happen again in any Communist government.
