Misskaela
She is the protagonist of the book. Misskaela is an obese young girl who lives on the Island of Rollrock. Amidst this tightly knit community she is considered somewhat of an outcast because she is prone to complain and considered unattractive. Harboring a great deal of resentment for the women in town, she determines to make them pay for their criticism and hatred. She uses her ability to talk to the seals to make them come ashore and transform into humans (who may return to seal form if reunited with their seal skins in the water). Convincing the men of the town that these seal women are more desirable than their purely human counterparts, Misskaela effectively accomplishes her goal to humiliate the women of the town. She also becomes a mother of a human-seal baby herself.
The Seal Man
Misskaela first discovers her magical powers when she persuades this seal to come ashore. He immediately transforms into a man, and they consummate the event. He later becomes Misskaela's child's father, although he has returned to the sea already in his original form.
The Seal Baby
After Misskaela's romance with the first seal-human, she discovers that she's pregnant with his child. She gives birth and loves the baby. Soon she learns, however, that the child is not capable of surviving on land, so she releases him to his seal father.
