The Book of Saladin Characters

The Book of Saladin Character List

Saladin (AKA Salah al-Din)

The famous counter-Crusader who fought against European armies who were fighting to repossess important landmarks in the East as stakes for the spread of Christianity. Saladin's military prowess helps him to defend his community from religious zealots who are coming as warring invaders. He knows that the religion of their warped minds has made them believe that all Muslim people are enemies of God, but without a method to communicate to them that their view is closed-minded, he is made to fight, and in that fight, he elevates the ranks and becomes an official in North Africa.

Ibn Yakub

As proof that Judeo-Christian religion can coexist with Islamic religion, we see Saladin's wife interviewed by this important scribe from Jerusalem. The Jerusalemite helps to frame the suffering of the locals in a way that exploits the heretical nature of the Crusades. The hypocrisy is clear because of his knowledge of Jewish folklore and especially the law which prevents Christians as well as Jews from committing unnecessary acts of warfare or murder. In contrast, Saladin is not given much of a choice; his choice to fight to win or to do nothing and watch as invaders torture and kill his entire community.
