The Book of Negroes Irony

The Book of Negroes Irony

Irony of the village Holytown

We can see in that in the Chapter "They come and go from Holy ground", Malcolm Water approaches her to help him. He pleads her to handle childbirth of a 13-year-old girl who was pregnant because of him. Later in the next Chapter when Aminata escapes from Lindo and moves towards the Holy ground, an old man warns him and advises to take another route. The name "Holy ground" is ironic to the practices going on in the area by the people residing there. The name gives a false concept of the area as a place for worship and religious rituals. However, it is an area of sexual and other immoral practices by prostitutes or dominant men.

Irony of the island Freetown

The Freetown was a concept of British which agrees to give freedom and land to the African slaves on a distant island in Africa. the company officials promise the African people to take them to a distant island where they could leave without worrying about slavery, be productive and live as they wish. However, when they reached there, the situation is quite conflicting from what had been guaranteed to them. Though they are not considered as slaves, the people were forced to work for them to get food, water, and money. They didn't keep the promise of giving land to them as King Jimmy tries to interfere in the area. In conclusion, they are not at all free on the island except the fact that they are not called slaves but still doing the same work as them.

Dramatic irony when Aminata gets summoned out from the ship

Readers are purposefully drawn into a relaxing mood when Aminata and Chekura reunites and when they become ready to sail together in the same ship safely. However, at the very last moment, Aminata is called back by the officials as someone had claimed a complaint against her. This was really an unexpected moment for most of the readers and therefore it is a dramatic irony. The readers would never expect Appleby to come at this moment to avenge Aminata. Tragic incidents follow Aminata wherever she goes, but she grows stronger and stronger after each event.
