The Book of Form and Emptiness Symbols, Allegory and Motifs

The symbolism of misery

Misery in the novel is symbolized by death. When Benny's father dies in a tragic road accident, his problems start. For instance, Benny feels lonely and stressed to hear voices from the objects in the house. Similarly, Benny's mother is depressed after her husband dies. Consequently, it is a sad story that both the mother and the son live in misery due to the death of their loved one.

The Library

The library is used figuratively to represent peace. Out of all places, Benny finds peace of mind in the library, where the voices of the objects are not extreme. At the library, Benny meets a girl that he later falls in love with. Therefore, the library is an emblem of tranquillity in Benny's life.

The poor poet

The poet is a symbol of hope and inspiration. When Benny meets the poor poet, she is surprised to learn that he is a man of wisdom, and he advises him on how to cope in life and use his ability to break through. For instance, the poet tells Benny that he should not take his ability to hear the voice of objects for granted because that is a rare occurrence. Therefore, the poet reminds Benny of the significance of finding his voice.

Benny’s hearing ability

Benny's ability to hear objects symbolizes his breakthrough in life when he tells his story to the world. Benny finds a book that uses its voice to guide him in life by giving him vital lessons. Therefore, Benny finally finds his voice, and he uses it to communicate with the world about his life history.
