The Blossoming of Bongbong Metaphors and Similes

The Blossoming of Bongbong Metaphors and Similes

“You have skin like the surface of the moon.”

A metaphorical physical description of Frisquito by Bongbong. Just prior to this subjective expression, the narrator objectively—one assumes—paints a portrait of Bongbong’s face with a description that includes an oversized forehead, very pale skin, slanted eyes and—well, maybe one doesn’t assume it is so objective, after all—“a face that resembled a retarded child.”

“I am surrounded by androids.”

The opening line explicitly states that Bongbong is going mad. Or, at least, that he feels as if he going made. Is there a difference? The descriptive imagery that Bongbong uses to describe the world around him and its inhabitants and objects certainly seem to be evidence suggesting that in relation to Bongbong, as Hank Hill might say: that boy ain’t right. Then again, how many of us often feel as though we are the only human surrounded by mechanical copies?

“We’re eating the sunset.”

Bongbong becomes obsessed by the idea of eating eggs. The awareness of the source of this food item takes him from the literal—“We’re eating embryos”—to the above metaphorical imagery which also contains, admittedly, a tinge of literal truth once you start thinking about it.

Bongbong’s Visions

Bongbong is subject to visions which are usually quite surrealistic and often grotesque. On one occasion, however, the vision is anything but grotesque, though still perhaps within the realm of the surreal:

“A young woman entered the bar, wearing a turban on her head made of torn rags. Her hair was braided and stood out from her scalp like branches on a young tree. Her skin was so back she as almost blue.”

“Uterina Furor”

Bongbong moves in with a woman named Charmaine who is a self-described nymphomaniac. Bongbong may or may not be homosexual, but his capacity to completely satisfy Charmaine leaves her wanting. At one point this paradox in their relationship reaches a state of critical tension and she lashes out in confession:

“You know what I’ve got, Bongbong? Uterina Furor…That’s why may mother used to say…Nuns get it all the time. Like a fire in the womb.”
