Carter was an admirer of Surrealist director Jean Cocteau’s La Belle et la Bete, and some imagery in “The Courtship of Mr Lyon” and “The Tiger’s Bride” is clearly drawn from it. This black-and white film, ninety-three minutes long, in French with subtitles, is available from the Criterion Collection.
