Emma Lou Morgan
Emma Lou Morgan is a young black, dark-skinned, woman born in Idaho who goes to California to go to the University of Southern California (USC), eventually moving to Harlem at the peak of the Harlem Renaissance. In Harlem, she navigates the complex issues of racism and discrimination, even within her own community, that she has experienced throughout her life.
Weldon Taylor
Weldon is a man whom Emma Lou first becomes involved with at a picnic in Idaho. She is initially put off by his darker skin tone, but ends up becoming captivated with his presence and charm. However, Weldon announces he is moving out of Idaho for job opportunities, causing Emma Lou to blame her skin color.
Alva
Alva is a man Emma Lou dances with at a cabaret in Chicago, though she later finds out that he did it as a favor. However, Alva truly sees past her skin color, saying the book's iconic quote: "The darker the berry, the sweeter the juice". When Emma Lou moves to Harlem, she finds Alva again, who now has a child. Emma Lou begins to take care of Alva's child, but eventually leaves them to gain independence.
