The Belle's Stratagem Characters

The Belle's Stratagem Character List

Letitia Hardy

She is the protagonist and heroine of her own story. Determined to marry a man who truly loves her but long ago betrothed by her parents to Doricourt, Letitia concocts an elaborate scheme to actually convince him that he does indeed love her. When she faces disappointment, she doesn't become discouraged but instead adapts. She's the kind of person who will stop at nothing to make what they desire a reality. Along the way, she befriends and helps out Lady Frances Touchwood.

Doricourt

Doricourt's character is somewhat flat in this play. He is long-awaited object of Letitia's affection, but he does not care for her for whatever reason. He's a bit of a snob. When Letitia completes her devious scheme to woo him, she does indeed persuade him to lover her. He's impressed by her and admrers her tenacity, though he doesn't know to what great lengths she went to make him feel this way.

Sir George Touchwood

Touchwood is an acquaintance of Letitia's. He and his new bride, Frances, are struggling in their marriage because of his insane jealousy. Regardless of Frances' actual fidelity, he has convinced himself that she is unfaithful. In fact, he is consumed by his fear of her lifestyle to the point of authoritatively forbidding her to attend certain social function. If he had his way, she would stay under his lock and key always.

Lady Frances Touchwood

Lady Frances is a young socialite trying to adjust to married life. Unforeseen to her, she has married a man who is so insecure that he has become consumed by jealousy. He doesn't trust her to go anywhere, wear anything, or talk with anybody without his express permission because he's afraid that she will stop loving him if she climbs the social ladder. Actually, Frances is a curious but apprehensive soul. Her title and upbringing dictate that she have no trouble ingratiating herself with the aristocracy as a young socialite, but she is timid and unsure of herself. She comes to rely upon Letitia's encouragement and direction in order to fully come into her own identity and prove a point to her foolish husband.
