Septimus Harding
Mr. Harding is the warden of Barchester Cathedral. He is a kind and caring person, who loves music and responsibly fulfills his duties. He quietly and peacefully tries to live his life and causes a feeling of tenderness with his appearance. If something hurts Mr. Harding, he becomes a little unstable, but convincingly hides it. Mr. Harding is not a go-getter, but when he gets the chance of a place under the sun, he immediately takes it.
Archdeacon Theophilus Grantly
Mr. Grantly is the most interesting character of the novel. He is Septimus Harding’s son-in-law and a husband of Susan Grantly. Mr. Grantly is the embodiment of the conservative principles of society, honesty, caste solidarity, practicality, corporate spirit and power. In the first part of the Chronicles of Barsetshire, Mr. Grantly seems to be a monster, but the reader’s opinion will change after reading the subsequent parts of the series.
Susan Grantly
Mrs. Grantly is the Archdeacon’s wife of and Mr. Harding’s daughter.
Eleanor Harding
Eleanor Harding is Mr. Harding’s second daughter. Eleanor is a woman, who is always recognizable, even if she just passes by. John Bold is in love with her.
John Bold
John Bold is a doctor, reformer and truth-seeker, who considers himself a real defender of the principles of justice. He is not a stupid person and not an anarchist.
Tom Towers
Tom Towers is an editor of the local newspaper. He considers himself the most powerful person.
