Langston Hughes is an American writer whose large body of poetry, fiction, and drama is often seen as the defining work of the Harlem Renaissance. Flowing out of this important moment in American history, Hughes's poetry explores many themes, including the relationship between races, the beauty and vibrancy of Harlem, the ever-present legacy of slavery, the inherent dignity of black people, and the hope for a unified America. Hughes has been called "The African American Poet Laureate of Democracy," linking him to one of his key influences, Walt Whitman.
