Several famous plays were first staged around the time of The Alchemist's debut, including Doctor Faustus by Christopher Marlowe (c. 1588), Hamlet by William Shakespeare (c. 1600), and The Knight of the Burning Pestle by Francis Beaumont (c. 1607). Other plays of Jonson's explore similar satirical themes, especially Volpone, which is another one of his "great" plays.
