Structure:
In the speaking circle, the students learn social elements of communication, reinforce ideas and vocabulary from the book, and talk about how the book and its characters relate to their own lives. Speaking circles are integrative and student-centered. Some rearrangement of classroom desks and chairs may be required, so that students are sitting facing each other in a circle, rather than facing the teacher in rows. The teacher acts as topic moderator, devil's advocate, and mediator, but essentially lets the students find their own meanings.
