Throughout these chapters, Simon becomes a successful but ruthless businessman. Are his methods justified? What do his methods suggest about the nature of business? Which is better, Augie’s refusal to commit to a job or Simon’s cruelty toward employees and competitors?

Different students will have different answers to this question, but they should note that if they prefer Simon's direct approach, they'll also need to accept his cruelty and imperiousness. If they prefer Augie's ambling approach, they'll need to address his refusal to take responsibility.
