Chapter 36 - Diffraction - Questions - Page 1108: 6a

Answer

contracts

Work Step by Step

Increasing the frequency of the light will result in larger values of the wavelength. For a single slit experiment : $\alpha \sin \theta = m \lambda $ where $m=1,2,3,....$ (minima) We can see that the wavelength, $\lambda$, and the angles to the minima, $\theta$, are inversely proportional. Increasing the wavelength will decrease the angles to the minima, resulting in a tighter, more contracted pattern.
