Chapter 2 - Motion Along a Straight Line - Questions - Page 32: 10d

Answer

Just then, the magnitude of the apple's velocity is 2m/s.

Work Step by Step

Initially, the apple was being accelerated upwards. At the instance it is dropped, it still has that upward velocity of 2m/s. Once in the air, the downward force of gravity slows the apple to a stop, then it gets accelerated downward. The instance right after the apple is dropped, (before gravity accelerates it downward) it is still traveling at 2m/s upwards.
