We know that it is possible to have collision without any physical contact. For example, when two proton are sent towards each other, they come very close to each other and then repel and move backwards due to electrostatic repulsion between them. In this example, the electric particles don't touch each other physically but there is an apparent collision due to the electrostatic force.
