Chapter 1 - Section 1.9 - Hybridization - Problem - Page 40: 1.28

Answer

a.) All C-H bonds are formed from $C_{sp^{3}}-H_{1s}$. The C-Be bond is formed from $C_{sp^{3}}-Be_{sp}$. The Be-H bond is formed from $Be_{sp}-H_{1s}$. b.) All C-H bonds are formed from $C_{sp^{3}}-H_{1s}$. All C-B bonds are formed from $C_{sp^{3}}-Be_{sp^{2}}$. c.) All C-H bonds are formed from $C_{sp^{3}}-H_{1s}$. All C-O bonds are formed from $C_{sp^{3}}-O_{sp}$.

Work Step by Step

Draw the lewis structure of each molecule. Find the hybridization of each atom by counting the number of bonds it has. Remember that double and triple bonds are counted as one and that lone pairs count as one "bond" as well.
