A gamma ray is a ray of high-energy electromagnetic radiation with a mass number and atomic number of 0. When a gamma ray is released the mass number and atomic number do not change.

Gamma rays and beta particles are the two most dangerous forms of radiation. While beta particles can be blocked by aluminum foil, gamma rays are much more powerful and can even penetrate lead shielding.
