Chapter 21 - Electrochemistry - 21.2 Half-Cells and Cell Potentials - Sample Problem 21.1 - Page 741: 8

Answer

See explanation.

Work Step by Step

Because the cell potential is negative, we know that the reaction is not spontaneous, and therefore will not take place spontaneously. Note: While the book states that the cell potential is the difference between the reduction potential of the reduction half-cell and the reduction potential of the oxidation half-cell; reversing the reduction potential of the latter cell and adding it to the reduction potential of the former cell gives the same result and often prevents mistakes in the cell potential calculation.
