The cell wall of Gram negative bacteria have an additional bilayer composed of proteins and Lipopolysaccharides. This outer layer prevents the antibiotics to access the cell wall hence rendering them ineffective. That's why gram stain test is carried out first to identify the type of cell wall and then treatment is prescribed.
