Chapter 2 - The Chemistry of Microbiology - Questions For Review - Short Answer - Page 54: 2

Answer

Five properties of water that are vital to life are: 1. High Specific Heat: Due to this property water requires large amount of energy to heat, which is essential in many ways. 2. Cohesion: is the property due to which other molecules dissolve in water. This plays important role in transport of body fluids. 3. Adhesion: is the property due to which water molecules stick together. This is observant in capillary action, where water moves against gravity in plants, etc. 4. High Boiling Point: Water has high boiling point, which makes it a good coolant and it distributes heat more efficiently. 5. Transparency: This property of water allows light to reach low levels in seas hence playing a vital role in marine life.
