Dehydration is the removal of a water molecule from the reactants. One of the reactant loses a hydrogen ion and the other reactant loses a hydroxyl ion which combines to form a water molecule. In a hydrolysis reaction, addition of water molecule takes place. Hydrogen ion and hydroxyl ion is added to the reactants respectively.
