Answer
Leeuwenhoek (1632-1723) as the inventor of the microscope was the first to discover protozoa hence he is often referred to as "the father of microbiology". However, some would argue that the true father of microbiology is Koch (1843-1910) as he discovered the disease causing agents of syphilis, leprosy, tuberculosis and other diseases. Louis Pasteur (1822-1895) is often also referred to as the father of microbiology due to his discovery of the vaccination and fermentation and pasteurization.
Considering Koch or Pasteur as the father of microbiology might be correct as their work helped prevent disease whereas Leeuwenhoek only observed the organisms. Leeuwenhoek certainly laid some foundation for future work however Pasteur and Koch used the discoveries to identify and control specific diseases.
